…A thoughtful and moving meditation on the personal and social effects of “race.”

—Dr. Heide Fehrenbach, author of Race after Hitler: Black Occupation Children in Postwar Germany and America (Princeton University Press,2005)

I loved the book. The imagery in the beginning (being a teacher of high school kids) absolutely hooked me right off the bat, and the suspense never stopped building right up until the end. It is one of the most compelling memoirs I’ve ever read. The turmoil in Dan’s mind simply never gave the reader any peace, and the big questions, “Why is this kid such a good kid?” and “What made him like this?” haunt the reader all the way through the whole story. Then, in that last chapter, everything is summed up but it’s not preachy. Answers are there, yet we are left with “What a wonderful world this would be if we could only…”
